I know the capacity of the water for a Farmall H, but since I can't really measure it, how far up do I fill the radiator?

Andy Martin said: I don't do show tractors, but antifreeze is pretty high anymore so I try not to use more than I need. But when you're haying and losing water they get filled to the top every time.

Well, I filled it and found a big leak in the radiator. So it's coming back out, and I'm taking it to a shop to check and fix. third party image

Just thought I'd pop back in here and say obviously I was mistaken about my "fill it to the top" advice! Learn something new every day! Guess I've always just done it that way on automotive applications since, 9 times out of 10 after the initial fill, once things circulate through the heater core, thermostat opens, air pockets get worked out, etc., ya gotta top them off again.

Never been around a show tractor where there were any worrys about makin a mess when they push some out the overflow...usually it just soaks into the ground anyway....we always just tipped up the cream can full of water and filled 'em till they were full when we refilled 'em in the springtime, then ran 'em all summer and drained them again in the fall. Of course this was on the letter-series tractors we used in the hayfield....the ones we fed with in the winter had antifreeze.

You are right on "old". My book says to fill it 4 inches below the top of the filler neck. That should put it over the core on most radiators. If you overfill it the fan could pick up the overflow coming out and blow it back on the engine . Makes a mess, as I found out. Leave room for expansion.

Just a little bit over the top if the core. If you fill it more the first time it gets good and warm it will push out all the extra water that is in it and can make a mess and cause you to take a shower if to full. You have to leave room for expansion so thats why you only fill it so it has a little bit over the core.

Mike, get it as full as you can, right up to the overflow tube on the radiator neck.

Guess I was typing the same time Andy was! I should add, though, that I always fill them clear up, and with use it pushes a little out the overflow and winds up about an inch down like Andy stated.

About a half inch below the top of the radiator. Not the filler neck, the actual top of the upper tank.

As long as you have the top of the radiator core covered you'll be fine. The water pump will throw enough water up to keep it circulating.
