F-20 piston rings and crankshaft

Two questions here. Hot my pistons out and I have very little wear in the cylinders or on the bearings. I am wondering if it is necessary or prudent to replace the rings since the pistons are out. I had planned on just honing the cylinders and putting the pistons back in. My second question is whether I have to take the crank out to replace the front and rear seal. If so what are the steps on removing the crank. The engine is out.

Scott,

If you are going to all the trouble to have the block stripped down I would take the block to your local machine shop and have them dip it. That will strip all of that old grease, grime and mineral buildup inside the coolant passageways. Then you have a clean block to begin with.

The local machine shop had to get rid of the hot tank. EPA won't allow it anymore. Are you still able to clean that way?

It should've read so the the sleeve will slide into the seal. Hal

You should clean that block area thoroughly around and under where the sleeves & seals sit. Dirt and rust are probably in that area. Be sure to use some dish detergent to coat the lower area of the sleeve so they will slide into that new sleeve.
If there's a recessed area in the top of the block for the top of the sleeve to sit you need to clean that area too. If the F-20's are similar
to to the Farmalls you probably need to pull the damper from the engine. Hal

Specifically, there are rubber o-rings sealing the gap between the cylinder sleeve and the block. It's likely that on a 70+ year old tractor that they haven't been replaced in 50 years or so, so they're probably dried out and cracked.
Dad says you can replace the cylinders on these engines right in the field, so the sleeves should be downright simple to remove.

Replace the o-rings now that you have the engine apart. If after assemble you find them leaking you have to disasemble the entire engine to replace o-rings. Cost for o-rings are minimal.

I'm with James. You just as well replace the O-rings now when youve got the engine apart rather than putting it all back together and up and running to find out theyre leaking. Its not real hard to get the sleeves out, and its fairly easy to get them back in. Up at school we can usually get them back in by hand, or a tap or two from a rubber mallet on the rare occasion.

Hope it keeps going smooth for you.

Why would I need to pull the sleeves? That seems like a lot of work and I am unsure of the benefit. Do the O-rings keep compression out of the crankcase or what is their purpose. How hard is it to remove the sleeves and re-install?

Scott they keep water out of the oil.You use a sleeve puller to remove the sleeves. They are behind the sleeves at the bottom where the sleeves just go through the block. When installing new ones lubricate them with dish liquid,DO NOT USE GREASE OR OIL.A machine shop might have a puller or a press can be used with the right size disc.O rings are available at rice equipment also.

Is it really necessary to remove them? Are they pulled out the top of the block? Thanks
