Got the mower in, pulleys are off, bless those tapered sheave pullies. What I'm seeing is shafts are tight, bearings are smooth. Right shaft does not leak grease, center one only slightly and left one excessively. I think the cause is me being too liberal with grease. Former owner was using grease and I suspect all bottom seals may leak if gear oil is used.

I have looked this situation over and decided two new seals will be the short term fix along with moly or Deere corn head grease. My reasoning, looking at the assembly system complete with press fit bearings, I'll get as many hours as I can with seals and lighter grease then buy complete assemblies. As I see it a guy could find himself mucking around in grease every two weeks for a long time in doing in box rebuilds. Having said that, I'll keep an assembly on hand, and with the pulleys I have it's quick change.

I'm using oil in mine and all three leak. I only lubed twice last year. I think the grease will be OK. Considering using grease in mine due to the leaks which are not that bad. I do have some bearing noise. Hope you get this answer. Your post was on page three. Occupied with grandkids over the holiday.

Haas: I can't see much point in trying to convert these old assemblies back to oil at this point. I think I'll go with corn head grease and keep a new assembly on hand. As I install new assemblies I'll go with oil for each new one.

I also can't see much point in rebuilding housings, just too much chance of shaft and casting damage, and unless one has perfect alignment he'd find himself mucking around in grease and oil on a regular basis.

I agree. Putting a hole in the side of the housing near the bottom bearing, or in the bottom of the housing between the seal and bottom bearing that can be taken out when greasing it will keep the grease from bursting the seal. I like Mobil 1 red synthetic grease as it has an operating temp far above petro grease. JimN
