I have a few questions as I wait for my service manual to arrive. I have my F-20 engine out and removed the pistons today. Why all the shims between the rods and caps? This is an untouched engine and I need to know the rod bearing to crank journal clearance. The bearings are good and the journals are good and I was going to use plastigage to measure the clearance. What is the rod bolt torque? Also does anyone know the ring gap locations? Or is it important. I always space them according to the manuals for my car engines. Thanks in advance.

Scott,Throw the spes away,Ive redone several of these.I have used plastic gague and set the rod bearings at .004.But cowman is right add or remove shims as needed while cranking the motor.Try to keep the shims seperate and put them back as they come out,this will give you a good start.as for rod bearings tighten them tight and install cotter pins.After tightening a few you will get a feel for the torque.I torque the head bolts at 90 lbs run it for awile and tighten each one just a little more.With the motor complete in the tractor a torque wrench wont fit in some places than use a wrench and go by feel.I was told by a person that visited the assembly line several times that he never seen a torque wrench in the factory.

The shims are to take up wear but you probably figured that out. You want them as snug as you can get them without binding. Turn the enging a full revelution when checking as the cranks tend to wear out of round. I tighten everything by "feel" so can't help with specs. Just stagger the ring gaps.
