I have a 49 c. The engine was stuck when I got her. I freed it up and got it started but it backfires thru the carb. I rebult the carb and all new plugs wires points condensor rotor in it. Still does the same thing. I am thinking sticking valve? Any ideas? Thanks

Like Hal says --get into the valve cover & take a look. Check the valve lash --too tight on an intake will cause trouble.

Take a compression test.A valve maybe stuck or warped now.I have had motors that have been sitting for a few years to warp a valve and cause a back fire,Usually it will be the intake valve if it backfires back through the carb.

Firing order right?? Next the carb may not be clean enough. A carb that runs lean will cause that problem. Not sure if it has an adjustable main jet but if it does open the main up some if not you need to clean the carb better

Have you tried adjusting the timing? What condition is the distributor in, if the mechanical advance was stuck it might cause some of your issues. tractorsam

Are you sure you have the plug wires in the right firing order?
2-1
4-3 Take a look at the push rods to make sure none are bent. Hal
