I was talking with another member of the local tractor club the other night and the subject of leaking gas caps came up. Mine have always leaked a little but his seems to be leaking a significant quantity of fuel. He's tried new caps from several sources as well as stacking multiple gaskets to no avail. There's no visible defect in the sealing surface and it's left me rather baffled as to why it should still be leaking. Has anyone out there discovered a solution to this problem? Many thanks, tractorsam

Well, some excellent suggestions have come up and I'll start trying them and see where I get to. Hopefully one or a combination will see this problem sorted. Many thanks, tractorsam

One of my new caps leaked. It was because there was too much lip on the cap. I ground off the excess so the cap would fit closer to the tank and it hasn't leaked since. Maybe the company making the caps are not getting the seal spot welded close enough to the rim. Just guessing.

Your tank lip may be distorted more than it appears. IH had a re-forming tool which was supplied to dealers for the purpose of straightening gas tank lips that got bent down from years of filling the tank from 5 gallon cans resting on the tank opening. If you have a dealer close by you may be able to borrow it. I see one on e-bay once in a while. I know a machinist who has reproduced and improved the tool. He offers them for sale but they are pricey. It would be a good thing for a club to buy and offer to their members.

On our Super A, I always used that as a gas guage....when it wasn't a little wet around the cap from sloshing fuel, it was time to fill it up!

Actually though, if none of the other suggestions work, maybe try making a new gasket out of some softer comformable material like a soft rubber.

Have you tried a triple baffle cap? They are much better and are not supposed to leak. You can get a free one on www.ihgascap.com

Andy.

I do have one of the triple baffle caps but I hadn't really noticed it leaking less than my original cap although the caps are on different tractors and I've not really been using them at the same time so I should try a better comparison. One of the tractors concerned is a Massey Harris so is there a generic source for the triple baffle cap? Many thanks, tractorsam

Sam: I find if one bends the tabs a bit on those triple baffle caps, giving a bit more presure, seems to work better than a second gasket.

Is the fuel tank filler neck in good shape? If it is good and the cap still leaks, I don't know what would be causing the leak.

Andy.
