I have a Farmall M. The guy i bought it from said it is a 1946 but it has no serial tag. I heard you can use casting numbers. How can I tell? Does anyone have a list of casting numbers and when the were cast?

I always understood that when it left the factory the engine and chassis s/n were the same. Only trouble is that you wont know if the engine has been changed. There are two lots of chassis No's given for the years 1946 to 1952, but essentially if your engine No is between 104215 and 122822 it will almost certainly be a 1946 engine and if your casting No's are P (maybe O because of late usage for whatever reason) your M is almost certainly 1946. In case you dont know this and I apologise if you already do. The X at the end of engine No signifies original fuel type. X1 Gas X3 Kero/distillate. MTF

P was 46, Q was 47, W was 51. Guy Fay's Data Book has the whole table that also explains why some letter wre skipped bu not always???

Look over the casting codes (not part #s) on your tractor. Most will be the same or consecutive letters. The higher letter would be a pretty good indication of the year it was all assembled. (i.e., my '47 BN has Ps and Qs, indicating that it would have been put together in '47 from parts cast in both years, which jibes with its serial number.)

The Bs and the As made in Chicago, the chassis number matched the engine number, but Guy's book doesn't say one way or the other whether that was the case with the Ms.

There is a casting number and a DATE CODE on many castings.

I have read that the casting dates on a given tractor may vary as much as one year.

They apparently would make a year's "run" of certain castings, then switch to a different part.

There's also such a thing as allowing important castings, such as engine blocks, to "season" for a certain length of time before machining.

The link below shows the alphabetical date code to year correlation.

Zach If ya look on the engine. under #1 [front spark plug]. you will find a flat area just below where the block and head meet. you will find the s/n. If you post a casting code somebody will tell you the year. Bill
