Greetings gentlemen. I'm still looking for a set of .040 main bearings for a 1949 Farmall M. I have been offerred a part set of .060 so another part set of that size would be just fine. Of course it will only cost me the equivilant $650 to have a set made. By the way my crank still only comes up rusty when I use it as an anchor. MTF

This is where it may get a bit confusing because I can't actually find out when or indeed if M engines were ever produced in UK. The first definite dating is the BMD engine in about mid 1953. I'm fairly sure that the earliest British M's Had US engines cos the serial No's seem to run. As I said the Gentleman with a half set of .060 is in Texas. Thats life. My mother told me there would be times like this. But she never said how many. MTF

Thanks for the interest and information coming my way. All of it is relevant. About the depth of hardening I have no idea, but I do know that IH produced .060 bearings. I actually have an offer of a half set (The centre thrust bearings)so if you know of anyone with the other half maybe you would like to let me know. In answer to your query shipping from your side of the pond to mine is $396--$410 fortunately its a spare engineso theres no big rush. One day someone will know of a set of .040 MTF

Sorry, didn't know you were out of country. Just looked up information on crankshafts to double check my memory. Some IH information calls the hardening tacco hardened and some say induction hardening. This next is a from IH engine information. The hardening is deep enough to allow grinding the shaft to .030 undersize and still have a hardened bearing surface. Hardening of the bearing journals by this method leaves a tough unhardened core for strength. Also have a listing of IH bearings furnished for engines up until 1962. .032 is the biggest undersize listed for a M. Also by then they were not excepting any crank cores for credit that had a part # suffix below DD. That would be all original US M below engine serial # 278050. Also .032 was sold for worn .030 undersize cranks. Listing does show .060 bearings for some british engines. Is your crankshaft # 45571 D, DA, DB, etc?

You may not want to hear this, but the IH M crank was surface hardened on the journals and anything past .030 off the journals is likely to get past the hardened part. May be different where your at but a M crank can be found pretty cheap that will clean up at .030 or less in some places. Shipping may be high and I don't know how good it is but there's one in the classified for 35 dollars. You could also upgrade to a late M,SM,400 or 450 crank, just use the bearings for the larger jounal crank in the M block.

IH offered 'service' (refurbished) crankshafts that were 1/32" undersized. I don't know if they rehardened them after grinding them down or if the hardened surface goes deeper than that.

Long time ago since I went to school so somebody correct me if wrong. I think 1/32 inch is only one and one quarter 1000 more than .030 1000 of a inch.

If I understand your reply that IH sold crankshafts 1/32 inch undersize. I was just pointing out that 1/32 of a inch is less than 32 thousands undersize, so your hardly past the .030 undersize. I wasn't trying to be smart about asking for correction on the answer if wrong. When IH used to exchange cranks the biggest undersize bearings I know of they furnished for M was .030 and .032. Any other information is welcome.
