Wheel weights.

I recently bought a set of rear wheel weight for my '39 H at an auction. They were painted JD green, so I was able to get them for $25.00 each. I took them to my neighbor who has his own sand blasting business. He charged me $18.00. Three spray cans of IH red for $12.00. Now good as new for a total of $80.00 After they were sand blasted one of then has the old IHC emblem with the circle around it and the other one has the later IH emblem on it. My question is how much do the weights weigh? Also what size bolts should I use to attach them to the tractor. Finally, what side should be facing out, the flat side or the side with rounded edges?

Thank You.

You will have a much longer lasting job if you will apply a double coat of non-sanding primer over sandblasted cast iron. Three rattle cans gave you at best one very thin coat of paint.

The weight is always mounted on the concave side of the wheel and with the flat side out no matter the orientation/direction of the wheel.

This way more than one set will "inter-lock" with both the wheel and with one another.

Hey Allen, do you have any reason the weights should be on the concave side? I always figured they made the split weights so you could put them on the inside if you so desired.

Those split weights were introduced possibly when the 56 series tractors came out, but for sure when the 66 series was introduced. I think the two halves together will be slightly heavier than just one of the one piece weights. The two piece weights are fully interchangeable with the one piece. I have a set of the two piece weights on my 1950 H, with a set of the one piece weights riding piggy-back.

Split weights were available on a 450, I just looked at the owner's manual, they are to facilitate mounting on the inside, as well as easier handling.

Allan, that is the correct way to have them installed, but the side that is out is not what I call the "flat side". The other side may be "concave", but it is much more flat than the "convex" side which is exposed in the picture.

heres a pic of my m with the rear weight. if the rim is dished out, they go like this. notice the oval shape of the inside of the weight. the big side goes where the bolts on the axle clamp is. that way you can get in there to loosen the axle clamp to slide the wheels in and out.

Flat side out. They weigh about 145 pounds. The bolts should be as big at will fit through the hole, I think they are 3/4 of an inch and 4 inches or so long.

Nope. The flat side goes up against the wheel.

Depends on which side of the wheel you are going to put them on. You will have to determine which side goes out, because if you put them on the "dished in" side of the wheel, the flat side will go out, if you put them on the "dished out" side of the wheel, the flat side will go next to the wheel. Get you "cherry picker" on one of them, move it up to the wheel & see which suits your fancy. A long redi-bolt or heavy rod will be necessary to help with allignment. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

It doesn't matter which way the casts are flipped, put them on so that you can see the IH sign or they won't stay tight.
