Lack of power

Hi - when I first got my 1983 484 about 4 months ago it had lots of power. I loaded the bucket with about 450 lbs of old roofing material and hauled it off to the town transfer station, up some steep hills about 2.5 miles distant and back. No problem on the hills in 3rd gear high range.

About three weeks ago it suddenly developed a no power condition: I have to almost slip the clutch to get it going in LO/2nd gear.

Could I be suffering from a clogged injector and if so, how do I diagnose that? It is a three cylinder diesel with an estimated 5800 hours on it. It starts readily in 25 degree weather and smokes a little when first started. Idles at about 650 RPM and is very frugal on fuel.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

HOORAY FOR ALL YOU GUYS WHO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!! !!!!! !!!!!

It was the cable for the fuel shut-off that was preventing the lower lever on the fuel controller from going all the way forward.

The sheath on the cable is all discombobulated so when you pushed it back in, the inside wire didn't move enuf to move the lever all the way forward.

I disconnected it so the fuel control lever moves forward properly and went roaring down the driveway in HI/4th at 35 MPH. :O)

Now I can really blow snow when it comes and here in up-state NY, it snows occasionally. :o)

I'll order a new cable tomorrow morning.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE HELP GUYS.

Bob

Bob,
Good to hear the fix was simple. Now you know how HP is controlled on a Bosch injection pump.

I forgot to mention that when I purchased the tractor, I had the dealer change ALL the filters before I came and got the thing. So chances are it is not the fuel filters.

Thanks again.

Bob, some additional checks:
1) Disconnect fuel line where it feeds into the top of the fuel filter and catch fuel in a clean container. The fuel should flow at the full of the fuel line. If it doesn’t, there is probably junk in the outlet in the bottom of the fuel tank. Can blow compressed air backup the fuel line as a temporary fix but the problem will come back. My brother had a lady bug carcass in his 684 fuel tank causing similar problems.
2) Check the adjustment on the STOP/START/RUN control cable. With the STOP/START/RUN lever all the way up the control arm on the fuel injection pump that is attached to the control cable should be all the way forward touching the adjustment stop screw

I agree with JimB. The fuel shut-off cable can slip down by the pump all of a sudden you'll have no power. All you need to fix it is a screwdriver.

Well the first thing i would do is change the fuel filters, and hope that works. If not make sure there is no dirt in the fuel tank that might be ristricting the flo of fuel.
