I have recently acquired a Farmall H and I do not know it's history. Shows good oil pressure, 60 psi, but does smoke a little from time to time. I suspect that maybe the valve guides are bad and do plan on a valve job soon. Does anyone have any suggeations on oil viscosity? We use Mystic brand in all our tractors and vehicles.

Done. I actually had to get a "new" pan, which was in pretty messy shape, but a lot straighter than the original pan. I cleaned it out very well. Under the valve cover was very clean as well.

Maybe a dumb question, but what is HD oil?

High Detergent. I got one that has been using 30 W non detergent oil. I put HD oil in it and it broke the sludge loose and sucked it into the oil pickup...and i lost oil pressure...and I never noticed till it locked up.

I have two gallons of 15w 40 sitting on my tool bench ready to go. That what was recommended by several members of this board.

I'm not sure what viscosity came out of it. What viscosity is sludge?

Mike, the 15w-40 will be just fine, but remember that you need only 6 quarts.

I've had a '40 H since the mid '80s, always used 30W, never had any problems. I live in Iowa, and the only thing you notice is that at -20, its a little stiff to start, but I always warm a tractor before using it.

If you follow IH suggestions, they claim that during the winter, use a lighter weight such as 20W, or a multi-grade like 10W30.

I've had a 1950 Farmall H for 7 or 8 years and I use 10W-30 in it. It doesn't smoke and runs very good. The grade of engine oil will definitely depend on where you live and how you use the tractor though. I live in NorthWestern Colorado and use the tractor for plowing snow and other misc. tasks. Not hard usage. I'm basically just a putterer.

A good 15w40 would be fine or just 30wt too.
