I've been wondering whether it is possible to slow down the first gear of an H and in Guy Fays letter series originality guide it indicates that the 0-4 used a lower ratio for 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Has anyone had tried swapping these gears over to slow an H down and or will it work? Many thanks, tractorsam

Don't think all O-4 had the low speed low, there was a serial # break. If you have the O-4 low to put in a H you will need to use the lower shaft and all the gears, reverse idler gear and all gears on top shaft, they will work on the H main shaft. The O-4 main shaft will have a different ratio than a H one, also the rear mainshaft bearing cage is different between tractors. O-4 transmission gears in a H will make 3rd and 4th faster. also some O-4 had the faster than standard 4th gear and it would make a H over 7 MPH in 4th if used.Only way to keep a H standard 3rd and 4th speed would be to use parts from a low low for a H tractor or modify the standard H 3rd and 4th speed driving gear for use with the other gears on the O-4 counter shaft.

I believe you can swap out and get the Low speed 1st. However, you have to change out more than just the gears, maybe the reverse gear and shafts as well. There was a low speed option for the H and the parts info shows several parts, including both shafts and the reverse gear parts. Seems a waste to tear up an O-4 to do this, as the O-4 is worth a lot more than an H unless the O-4 is total junk.

I agree with you on this being a waste of a good 0-4 but it's a friend of mine who is interested in doing this. I think the tractor he has in mind to donate the gears is pretty well toast anyway. There are also quite a few orchard tractors around this part of the world as we grow a lot of apples here. Not that that would make junking a good tractor any better. tractorsam

Brilliant, that's just what I was after. I'm not too worried about anything other than first but it would be nice to drop the speed down a little bit. Many thanks, tractorsam

The O-4 had a low first gear, I think the rest were the same as on the W-4 but 1st was about 1mph. This is the reason that the O-4 tractors had solid front wheel centres to provide extra weight at the front. The other tractors, Farmall H and W-4 could be fitted with the lower 1st gear but were then required to fit front wheel or frame weights.

The I4 has a completely different transmission than the H. The I4 has a brake on the input shaft and I think the input shaft is longer than an H. I has been several years since I tore the I4 down.

dont know about wether the gears are slower, if they are they could be swapped to an H. would need gears from top and bottom shaft.
