I need some help with a "74 model 966 with some hydraulic woes. I have had this tractor about 5 years and has worked like a dream. However, about 1 year ago during cool weather (40-50 degrees), the power steering would take a while to warm up. After fluid/filter changes, this was corrected. Just recently, while running in the field, the 3 point lift quit working, as well as the remote valves and the steering/brakes got weak, but still had some function. The best i can tell, this seems like a problem in the rear pump. I was just curious if there were any relief valves that would be responsible for this, and if so where they are. The other observation i have noticed is that the fluid seems to keep very foamy after just light use. Any ideas? Thanks!

If the three point and remotes just up and stopped working then there is a good chance that ya sheared the key on the main pump . Drain the rear end and remove the pump , then remove the gear and see if the key sheared . But if what ya say about the steering and brakes not working wright here as not sure what ya mean for sure . Before ya do anything then check and make sure that the PTO is still working under load . If that is not working them my best guess here is ya did what i did last friday and took the center out of the pressure plate and maybe along with the PTO input. IF this is the case then a split at the bellhousing is in order . Hard to fix a tractor over the keyboard with out checking it out first. Don't think it is a valve .

thanks. I was using the pto under load when this occurred, and the pto continued working normally. Thanks again

I do not know if this is true for hydraulics, but on a hydrostat unit, if you have foam, you have an air leak somewhere. this could be in a return line, etc. And if you get foam, you get air, and hydrostats quit working or they work very sporadic with air in the system.
