Super M Clutch Problems

A neighbor has a Super M that he only uses to rake hay with. We split the tractor in half and the clutch fell apart in three pieces. The rivets had sheared off. Everything else looked fine, i.e. throw-out bearing and pressure plate. When I installed the new clutch, same thinkness and style I noticed that when I tightened the pressure plate that the fingers moved from protruding out about an inch to being flush with the pressure plate face. I went ahead and installed the clutch and put the tractor back together. I pressed in the clutch pedal but the transmission would not disengage. I could see the throw-out bearing moving through the grease access hole but it wasn"t quite going up far enough to engage the fingers on the pressure plate. Is this the wrong clutch, it"s the same size and thickness as the one that was in it before, but is that why it tore out the center of the other clutch? I don"t know if the clutch had been changed before and he was just living on borrowed time but I know he has been raking with it for a few years now.

Adjust the pedal to one inch of ferrplay at the point where the peadal casting rests on the platform. The clevices and pins on the external rod may need to be heated to do the job. Worn pins or ovaled clevice ends can be drilled out and replaced with bigger pins to reduce lost motion. JimN

Is it more than you can take up with the free-play adjustment? Just a thought. But it does sound like the fingers have gotten out of whack somehere along the line. And running the throwout bearing too far forward could make a mess of the whole works.

I worked on one a few years ago where the release fingers were all out of adjustment, in fact just floating they were so slack. The tactor had been "overhauled" so there's no real telling at what point they got that way. If your neighbor has been using the tractor right along and han't tinkered with anything up there, I'm not sure why they would suddenly get loose either. Is it possible that the adjusting nuts for the fingers got loosened in the process of getting the cover off?

It sounds like you've got to pull it back down any way. You can check the adjustment of the fingers.

Have you got the I&T-8 or the IH service manual that's spec ific to clutches? Both of those should have the correct specs for the different clutches that were available.

As a shade-tree fix, if it is the fingers that are out, you can go around the clutch with it installed and, one-at-a-time, adjust the fingers so that you have 7/16" of clearance between each finger and the face of the throwout bearing at rest. Not ideal, but with care (i.e., finding or making a gauge 7/16" think to use to set each one, so that they are consisitent) can be done. First test after such a fix hould be made with the pedal depressed and turning the engine by hand with the ignition off to make sure nothing is going to hit, scrape or bind.

That would work, but setting it up on the bench is preferable. If you can get a part number off the clutch cover (Rockford or Auburn) and get back to us, I can give you the specs for checking and adjusting it on the bench.

I assume you have readjusted the clutch linkage to allow for the new and thicker clutch plate... thicker cause its new and not worn. The thicker plate will cause the fingers of the clutch to be in more and the clutch linkage will have to be adjusted for that.

It would appear not to be the case in your scenario since you can see the throwout bearing not engaging but I have had to start the engine with the clutch depressed/disengaged and transmission in high gear to get the clutch to release from the flywheel/pressure plate even after cleaning both surfaces. Be extremely careful doing this for the obvious reason of being run over or running somthing over.

Sorry, no it"s not. It fits flush against the flywheel. I had thought of that and turned it over and then it rocked against the flywheel so I turned it back to its original orientation.
