B timing

I just rebuilt the magneto on a B (H-4), and can't seem to time it. With #1 plug out (front of engine), compression stroke via the thumb test, TDC both by timing mark and a flashlight look in the plug hole, I cannot get the magneto to 'trip'. At max advance I need to crank the engine another 20 degrees for the click. The slot in the tractor side coupling is almost horizontal. pointing to about 10 and 4 oclock, at TDC. Using a pliers to turn the mag, it trips with the dogs nearly vertical, so on the face of things it is not surprising that I can't time it.
Any insight would be appreciated. It ran before I took the mag off, but would die when it got too hot (we assumed a marginal coil). I can't speak to power: Dad's a retired farmer and just uses it with a belly mower for the large lawn, so it is never taxed. Terry THerneau

If you had the mag out, and had it opened up or rebuilt, you may have got the little rotor drive gear one tooth off. Take the distributer cap off, and see where the rotor is pointing when it trips. If you"ve rotated the mag as far as you can go in it"s timing slot, and still won"t trip at the right time/position, that might be the problem.

A couple of things seem to be amiss... the slot in the governor shaft/mag drive should be horizontal @ #1 TDC, and the mag's impulse should trip when the drive lugs are horizontal.

Many thanks to Bob, who said "...the mag"s impulse should trip when the drive lugs are horizontal."

This is exactly what I needed to know. Mine trips when the lugs are vertical. I"ve got the magneto service manual thanks to another link, and will examine the impulse coupline. Perhaps a key has sheared or something. Terry T.

Terry, I just timed an H last week and the book says when you set the roter to # 1 plug in the distributer to rotate the mag toward the engine as far as possible and tighten it enough so it dont move. Then crank the engine until you have # 1 at top center Compression again, Then rotate the mag outward until the impulse coupling trips. Should be timed. Hope this works for your B. Ed

BTW Terry,. When I rebuilt my Super A I filed a timing mark on the front fan belt pulley and marked it with white to help getting the engine on TDC if the need ever arose again !

Mornin Terry, Loosen the mag slightly and push the top of the mag towards the block. Rotate the engine by crank until you are on TDC again using the finger in the #1 plug hole and checking the DC line on the flywheel. When you have determined your on TDC again slowly rotate the magneto away from the block until the impulse coupling snaps. At that point tighten the mag in that position and replace your #1 plug and attempt to start your engine. Your rotor at that point should be just past the #1 spot on tour cap.
