Alternator for an H

I am helping my neighbor fix his Farmall H. The generator is shot and he wants to put a 12 volt alternator on it. The problem is that he does not want to cut a hole in his hood.

Standard Delco-Remy alternators are much too large in diameter to fit under the hood. He doesn"t have a computer, so I told him that I would search for him.

Can anyone help me find an alternator that would fit under the hood?

Thanks in advance!

An alternator from a 88 ford t-bird, with a 5.0 with AC, will fit under the hood of the H,, 100 amp alternators are avaialble,,, you can put a toggle switch in, and run it whenever you need it. Its a 3 wire, but you tie em together, to the positive post, and put a switch inbeteeen two of the wires and it works! Oh, you gots to put on a v belt pulley,,,,, chevy alt pulleys go right on this alt, so you got options for parts,,.. Chad

Look in the most recent issue (Nov/Dec 07) of Antique Power for Tech Tips (Alternator Coversion for a 46 H); they opted to preserve the 6V capability. The 6 volt alternator was purchased from Quick Start Automotive Electric (www.alternatorparts.com) which offers a 35A and 53A unit (Delco 10-SI alternator for 35A). The rest of the installation is discussed in the article

Over in Parts and Pieces on the left, there is a photo of a Delco alternator on an H. Titled "alternator on H". It"s a tight fit but it will work, should you want to use a Delco.

if you're looking for a small alternator, get one from a Chevy Luv/Isusu Trooper pickup, '81-'85 (alt built by Hitachi).

It is quite a bit smaller around than the standard Delco/Remy, but has the same connections, and spins the right way. The only thing you need to do is make a different mount bracket to hold it, as the alternator is less than half the length of a generator.

I mounted one on a '52 H, and it fit like a glove. Plus, at 50 amp, it has no problems powering anything you can hang on an H.

I pulled all the Generator, voltage regulator and wires out of mine last month. Bought a alternator with smaller pulley for a ford tractor from the local tractor dealer, belt from NAPA 30", built me a bracket out of metal from Lowes, and run 1 wire from the alternator to the Amp gage then to the battery. Works great didn't cut the hood and it fits between the valve cover and the hood. Can't even see it unless you look under the hood. Mine had already been converted to 12V with generator, voltage regulator, light bulbs, and ballast resistor. You will need these things if you are still 6V. About $120.00 for the change over
