What weight oil is used in the steering gearbox on my Farmall A? My guess is 90w, but would this get too stiff in cold weather.

Just remember to open a plug whenever you pump grease into the zerk. Otherwise bearings/seals like to pop out. I went to grease two years ago on my 1966 140 after 40 years of leaking HY-Tran onto my garage floor (thanks to this board) and I wish I had done it sooner.

I am a big believer in using JD or IH cornhead lube .It isn't quite as thick as moly and will not leak out.

Tim: I've been using moly grease close to 20 years in Canada. Tractor was quite regularly in temps down to -25F. Never noticed any real difference in steering. These Farmall A, SA, 100, etc. steering gear boxes leaked from the time they were 5 years old, poor design. Fill em with grease, they stay clean then.

Hugh,
Grease it is. Thanks for the idea. I think the grease will work great. I do not need another source for a leak.

Tim: The way I do it is put a grease zerk in the drain hole of steering box, and pump in grease until it comes out the fill plug. That way you know the compartment is full, thus any new grease must go to the steering gears and bearings. From there, everytime I grease the tractor the steering box get 6 pumps. You'll find it takes 3 tubes of grease to fill the box initially.

I started to do just that last night. I squirted 2 1/2 tubes into the check hole on the side of the case. That was all I had. Good to know I'm almost there. Off to Tractor Supply today, grease, plugs, and wires.
Thanks, Hugh.

90 weight will work fine. It will get thicker in cold weather, but will not make it harder to turn the steering wheel.
