Seveal years ago my father purchased a Farmall M form the origonal owner (who had it serviced by the dealership since the guy bought it). Now it needs brakes. The problem is in the serial number (Yes another serial number question). His sn. 228000 range with disk brakes. Disk brake parts are for sn. 294226 and above, with brake band parts below. Could the brake band assembly have been upgraded to disk brakes?

You either have a late enough M that disc brakes were installed on, or you have the AFTERMARKET Lambert disc brakes (The only "Upgrade" I know of) in which case youll have to find someone to reline them.

Go to the Case IH web site parts catalog, put in farmall for model then go to M then chassis then look at # 238 disc brakes special and see if thats what you have. If you look at tractor it will have 3 bolts holding brake housings on and brake pedals will be like drum brake pedals.

Yes. Many band brakes were updated to disk.

I know that if well serviced and adjusted the disk brakes work Ok, but with wear and age, I am not sure but what adding disk brakes back then would have been a "downgrade"
