Well last week I told you about my H overheating. After Radiator roding and flushing of the cooling system today I put back together and as my luck runs ( I haven't got any) when I fire it up it ran ruff. Antifreeze running out in front of the head and into oil. What do you think head gasket? Also how hard to replace head gasket?

I just read the posts below and all are good ideas, but I saw you already pulled the head off so what I was going to add won"t help now. If you can get hold of a radiator test cap with an air pump on it and pull the oil pan off you can see if there might be a crack or leak in the bottom of the block. With about 15 lbs pressure on the water it will force it out and you can see if it is coming from a bore past a piston or from the block or down the pushrod or drain holes. If a head inspection fails to find it you could put the head back on with the old gasket cleaned up good of course and test it. If you use a new gasket and it leaks, you will have to put on another new gasket when you put it back together after fixing the problem. If you have a non pressure radiator it may not work with a tester since the rad neck is different.

From my experience you are going to have to pull the head. Working on that old iron can turn up a lot of things. You need to have the local machine shop put a straight edge on the head to see if it is warped or been worked on by someone with a sander. Another suggestion would be to use a Permatex gasket sealer when putting the head back one. JMOP.

Its a bit tight but I've always managed to get the head off without removing the steering shaft. I actually have one off rite now. But get up high enough to be able to lift it straight up. MTF

I agree with Cowman, The head needs to come off to diagnose where the leak is. Head gaskets are modest in cost, and a probable cause. Heads are available from bare castings, to ready to install rebuilt. So don't give up. JimN

Head gasket and or cracked block or head. Not a big deal to pull the head. If i remember right we used to pull the head without pulling the steering shaft. Anybody know for sure? Since I am parting tractors I always just pull the shaft and get it out of the way. But the mechanic that taught me the trade was a stickler on NEVER taking anything loose that didn't aabsolutly have to come off. He would give me hell for disconecting a battery post.

Don't know, I can't even get the valve cover off of my 1940 H without pulling the steering shaft but I've worked on other Hs where it was a bit of a squeeze but didn't have to remove the steering shaft.

Steering rod did have to come out. I got the head off and found no break in the head gasket. After taking it off the front crumbled at the water port holes. Think that could be the problem?
