New Clutch in 140 won't disengage..

Had a new clutch/pressure plate/throw-out bearing put in my Farmall 140 (1974). Apparently everything went in OK. Once it was put back together and started, the clutch would not disengage to be able to put it in any gear. These parts came from TSC, etc. We looked up under thru the sight hole and could see the pressure plate move--seemed like it should have been enough...but no go. What happened??? Thanks BobG in VA

Bob,
I stopped by to see Ron today (because I realized that your tractor is the perfect test case for the ongoing head discussion with Hugh, and wanted to check it over and get some pictures). Anyway, helped him split your tractor again. He had everything ready to go, pretty much just set the jacks, unbolt it and wheel the front off.

For the short version... I think the problem is the fingers on the new pressure plate were not set properly from the factory and never fully releasing the clutch. We checked the clutch disc, it was facing the right way; measured the flywheel depth, it was within ~0.010 of an original (they turned the clutch face as well as the mounting flange to keep the spec); but the release fingers were ~0.350 out and were not consistant, saw 0.150 difference between them.

I think his feeling is that the plate is defective and he wants to check the options for returning it. I know there are two schools of thought there and I have had to re-adjust the fingers on a new one in the past, but he is leaning towards, "it is a factory setting that should be correct when you pay this much for it". He has a point as: 1- the flywheel is at factory specs so there is no reason to re-adjust them; 2- the fingers are not even consistant between themselves; and 3- the adjusting bolts and lock nuts were glued at the factory. Ron is a great asset to us down here in VA, I have learned alot from him. He is an honest, hard worker and he will get it straightened out for you.

Just a quick note to say don't worry, your tractor will live again! :)

I had the clutch disc backward in my 400. When I flipped it over, I noticed that if it is installed correctly, the disc will sit flat against the flywheel. If it is wrong side in, the disc will have a slight rocking motion when you push at the 3 and 9 oclock position.

Try it, and see if it rocks also.

I doubt I will make that mistake again.

SDE: Made that same mistake, had 3 friends show up just as I had the tractor ready to split. 1-1/2 hours later we were putting the clutch housing bolts back in. No one bothered to sit down and do the inspection, is it going right. Within minutes my buddies left.

First thing I did was try to adjust the clutch. At least I saved myself doing the wiring, hydraulic lines, fuel line, choke, etc. That night I resplit the tractor, taking 4 hours and very carefully watching everything I did. One tends not make those mistakes too often.

I agree with Bob.
If the clutch pedal freeplay was set to about an inch from the stop to the point that it starts getting harder to push down, and it will not release it is quite likely to need to be split to fix it. JimN

This IS NOT specific to the 140, but in many cases, if the lined plate is flipped over, so the wrong side is facing the flywheel, the springs in the middle of the pressure plate will catch on the flywheel bolts, and the clutch can't disengage.

That is true, but what I don't get is how can you ever get the pressure plate to bolt to the flywheel with the disc on backwards. The hubs of the discs on A's B's & C's I've worked on are much larger on the one side than the other and it HAS to go on right or you will not get the pressure plate bolted on.
I've not had a 140 apart, are they that much different than the earlier ones?

Thanks for all the replies. I remember doing a clutch job on a Jeep CJ (WWII vintage) during the mid '60s when I was teenager. Everything went in OK, but the same thing happened....we dropped the trans back out, turned the clutch around and all was well again....don't ya hate it when stuff like this happens..... I'll pass along the info. If anyone has any other ideas, pls pass them along as well. Thanks again BobG in VA
