Were there 2 different factory brakes available on the H? Either disk or band? If so is there any way to tell which is installed without taking off the covers?

Most H's have band brakes, later, IH put in Disc brakes. Disc brakes look like a big cast iron cover with bolts all the way around, band brakes are steel covers with a pin in the side with a spring on it.

Disc brakes were a factory option on M's but dealer added on H's, If IH would have used Osco Lambert's design on their disc brakes we wouldn't have the grooved brake shafts we have today.

Disk brakes were only installed on late '53 H's, right before they switched to the Super H. It's easy to tell the difference. The band brake cover is smooth, and you have springs over them.
Here is a picture.

The disk brake covers had a button in the center, and some indents around it.
Look close at this Super H to see.

I'll bet $20 you have band brakes

Mike, that is not quite true. Disc brakes were available as an option long before '53. I can't tell you the year but someone else probably can. They are in the H parts book

Lambert also provided disc brakes for the H in the aftermarket. I suspect IH bought those brakes and they are the same ones in the parts book.

The early disc brakes will not interchange with the later disc brakes. The splines are different. The early disc covers are attached with 3 bolts. The latter are attached with five bolts.

Looks like I have bands. That's what I figured but I went to buy the bands and saw the disks too. Thanks for the help.
