My M won't start. I hit the starter button and i hear a click. it won't click a second time. The amp needle flicks when I first flip on the switch before hitting the starter button. I had this happen a week ago, but fiddled with everything and it started. My father says I have a bad electrical connection at the battery. I live a long way from the tractor, so I just pulled the starter and the battery and brought them home.
i sthere a way for me to test the starter? the batteryhad a decent charge. The connects on the battery didn't look bad, but the M is stored outsdie. thanks.

Thanks everyone. i bench tested the starter - it was working. the battery had a charge-not great, so i put it on the charger. Even though the posts and cables looked decent I brushed them well and the ol'M started right up. I'm still not sure whether the problem was a stuck starter or a poor connection, but I didn't have to spend $$-- and that is a good day by any measure.

99.99999 9% chance it's a bad battery cable connection. Starters do not normally fail suddenly, it's a gradual process.

When it starts one time, then clicks the next, disassemble and shine up all points of all connections. This also includes any of those clamp-on battery cable ends. Take 'em completely apart, shine 'em up, strip some new wire, and reassemble.

I just had the same problem with my 450. We got a new battery for it a month ago and it worked fine. Then all it would do is click. I took the starter up to O'Reiley's auto parts and it tested fine. Checked all the wires and connections. It was the grounding connection to the tractor from battery. Mud, Grease, etc. (Field Jam)

Allen has the answer. A little bit of wear in the teeth on the flywheel will sometimes cause the starter drive to "lock" into the flywheel. Get your wrench, loosen the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter out just a bit until you hear or feel a "click". Shove the starter back in, tighten down the bolts and she'll start.

The very FIRST thing is to (some youve already done) remove, clean n wire brush, then re attach each n every battery n starter n starter switch n ground connection..... Make sure the battery is good and well charged, has electrolyte above all the plates, no cells have a gray or milky look, and if possible have a shop load test it....

If she still dont crank (and all cables n connections n grounds n battery are okay), you could have a bad starter switch or a bad starter or a stuck/jammed starter.

Turn the lights on and If when you try n start her the lights dim way down and/or the batery voltage drops drastically, then I suspect a bad starter UNLESS the engine is stuck or the starter is mechanically stuck/jammed. Rock/turn the engine and loosen n retighten the starter to make sure its not mechanically stuck/jammed.

If the ligths dont dim down n the battery voltage dont drop, Id suspect more of a starter switch problem although it could still be a starter problem like worn brushes.

A battery to the starter bench test will show if a starters definitely real baddddd ddd (wont even turn at all) however since theres no load it dont really tell you that much. It should spin rapidly with no bad grinding or bearing type noises but since theres no load its hard to tell how it acts trying to turn the engine under compression

Let us know what you find

Tractors have been stored outside for eons. Doesn't hurt 'em a bit.

Those old Hs and Ms would "drive lock". Usually, you can just loosen the mounting bolts, spin 'er up, retighten and you're back in business.

Sounds like a weak/bad battery OR a bad connection between one of the battery cables and the battery post OR at the other end of a cable OR a bad cable, itself.
