Howdy, boys:
It seems once in a blue moon a job just goes smoothly without fighting me every step of the way. My SH had sat too long and was running rough and I had to keep the choke half way out to even get it to do that. Finally, it just quit. I tore down the carb about a month ago and put a kit in it. Also I discovered that the gas tank bottom was covered with a gray looking substance (residue from old dried gasoline?).
So, I drained the tank, removed it from the tractor and poured 5 gals of carb cleaner in it, since I did not want to ruin the paint on the outside. Let it soak for a few days (and saved the carb cleaner) and flushed the tank with water and let it bake in the sun to dry. I also cleaned the sediment bowl, screen and valve as well as the fuel line.
Finally got up the energy to re-assemble everything this week. Things went together almost too easily. It was downright spooky.
I hit the starter and it caught almost instantly and purred. I didn't even have to touch the carb. No leaks! This has never happened to me before! I must be dreaming, I thought.
What a wonderful tractor - smooth running and feels stronger than I had imagined it would. Thanks for all the knowledge and encouragement gained from listening and sharing information on this site.
Now.... on to that terrible running Super M.

I have those days occasionally, like once in a blue moon. Our 53 Super H was the most enjoyable tractor restoration we've ever done. It didn't fight us on anything. As far as your gas tank goes, next time you have it off, it might be a good idea to treat the inside of it with "Red Kote" or a similar product.
I like our Super H a lot; it's smooth running but pretty "snorty" when we pull it. I love using it at plow days, pulling a 2X Little Genius plow.

Now--our Super M. Well, we're getting there but that boy has fought us every step of the way. But we will win and hopefully have for this summer.
