I am new to the Farmall family and could use some help. After recently purchasing a '51 Super C, I charged the battery and tried to turn over the emgine. No Luck. I got to looking around and the only way I could get the test lite to shine was to ground to the Negative battery terminal(Bad ground on tractor?) I cleaned up the ground spot on the tractor chassis and when re-attaching the positive lead ZZZZZ ZT,Sparks everywhere. I think the ignition switch is stuck in the 'on' position. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out my Radiator is un-repairable so I went back out to tinker and removed the ignition switch to get a new one. I noticed when I re-attached the Positive lead to the starter relay the end of the lead was coming in contact with the relay housing. Problem fixed, No more sparks and it starts like a champ. Thanks for your help.

There are several possible problems. A 51 super C has (from the factory) a 6volt positive ground system. with a generator, voltage regulastor, amp gauge, and a starter switch using a rod to mechanically connect the contacts inside (at the starter). If yours has had an alternator put on it from a automotive/truck application, it will (most likely be 12 volt negative ground.

If you put the battery in incorrectly, with either system, turn it around.

If the sparks were serious and you left it connected, things may be toasted a bit and need some diagnosis. The ignition switch can go bad, but it usually fails by not working, not by staying on. THe sparks fron the ignition being on would not make you excited they would be mild little sparks. Let us know if you have an alternator retrofit, or stock system, or what. JimN

It is a reptro fit Delco alternator. Turns out it was me hurrying and not paying attention. Someday I will learn, I hope. Things seem OK after the sparks as the tractor fires now. Thanks,
Jake

If it was just the ignition switch you would only get small sparks but if its the starter button you will get big sparks and the engine should try to turn over. I would pull the cable off the starter and then try again. If you get no sparks then you know its the starter button
