I have been searching the archives about hydraulic whine and hy-tran fluid loss and came across some helpful information. One of the posts mentioned a regular seal Federal-Mogul/National part # 471466 that I thought went between the pump and the engine. I took my pump off and there was just a regular black paper type gasket between the two and no seal. Is there supposed to be a seal on a 1948?

Thanks again.

Hi SteveNH,

The seal is recessed in the pump housing. Seems I recall in the past few weeks one of the "regulars" posted a picture of the pump from the IH parts manual.

Upon further investigation I think I found the thread.

Link

and it does look like it is behind the gear. Someone did a hack job bending up the washer to hold the nut in place so it won't spin off, do I do the same or is there a special washer?

YES by all means bend the washer so the gear cant come loose. Doesent take verry long for the gear to ruin the shaft if it gets loose.

I replaced the seal on my Super A before haying last spring. I had a devil of a time getting the pump to pick up its prime. Finally slathered a handfull of vaseline into the gears and reassembled it. Took right off. Someone here gave me that hint and I thought I would pass it on.
