I am thinking of telling the gas company to take their precious meter that they charge $15 a month for whether I use any gas or not and stick it in a " warm moist shady place". I am going to get a 500 gal or so propane tank as back up for the wood stove. I know I have to convert the furnace to propane. What is the going price for used tanks and for new ones? I doubt I would use half a tank a year most likley only a 1/4 tank, so I want to own a tank to avoid tank rent. Any suggestions or advise?

Just to confirm what you've heard, I paid $500 for a used 500 gal tank a couple of years ago.

You can figure on a average used tanks cost about a $1.00 per gallon. (500 gal tank $450-$500)

Paid $900 for a 1000 gallon tank 5 years ago--it was used. Our pre-pay LP was $1.40 a gallon in Sept. We went over yesterday, & it is $1.75 a gallon. This is Eastern Iowa.

I have a tank from AG-ONE that they furnish. You Can only save 5 cents a gallon by owning the tank. I pre-bought my propane back in June for $1.79 a gallon. Bob, I think you are located in eastern Indiana also. AG-ONE has merged with Harvestland of Richmond, Indiana.

Afternoon Bob, I bought used 330 gal tank from the farmer up the road a couple of years ago for $400, and the tank was half full. We used the bucket loader to put it on a trailer and tow it to my place, and I used some concrete blocks to level it out.

BTW, by owning your own tank you can buy from anyone who has a good price. My last delivery was $2.07 / gal in Vt from Amerigas.

Good luck, Bob. Around here that could translate into a 50-100% cost increase. They is a reason that tank is free.

The company I get my propane from lets me use the tank as long as I buy their high priced propane.
