I have a 49 H. 6 volt neg ground. Just had the gen. rebuilt. Tractor starts and runs at idle for about 5 minutes, then sputters and dies. Will start again after sitting for awhile. It was doing this before gen. rebuild, so i don"t think it is electrical, unless it would be something like the voltage regulator. Possibly fuel related? Maybe a carb rebuild is needed? I appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

Could be a terminal with only one strand of wire feeding current/ voltage in the ignition circuit. Check all terminals by pulling on the wire. The single strand conducts until it gets hot, & the resistance increases--shutting down the spark. Check this if all other checks fail to locate the problem. Check voltage at the coil primary when tractor dies to confirm.

Just to add to what the others have said. You also need to pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a god steady flow of gas there. You may have a good steady flow at the line but not the carb and if thats true then it still will not run. 5 minutes says either a fuel problem or a bad condenser either one or both can cause that problem. Now if you said it would run an hour then it would probably be the coil. Oh and it could also be an ignition switch going bad. Check for fuel flow and also check for a good blue/white spark when it dies. Then go form there

The symptoms sound a lot like a bad coil.

Check your fuel flow to the carb, remove the line at the carb and see that a steady stream of gas flows out. If it trickles, then you have blockage at the fuel bowl or tank.

EH, I have two Framall H's and they are "POSITIVE" ground tractors as are most Farmall and IH tractors of that vintage( 6 volt and letter series,60's and 70's etc) You may have electric problems if you have a battery in backwards..thats my first impression of your problem.

I think this tractor has been changed to neg ground by the previous owner. I bought it a few years ago as is, and had used it mowing, etc. until it started doing this.
How would I know if all of the wiring has been changed for neg ground or not? Could I just switch the battery cables, or would I need to make other changes to the voltage reg, and generator?

Neither your battery or generator really care one way or the other if the system is negative or positive ground. It will work either way so long as the system has been polarized after all wiring connections are made and before you start the engine.

I've read about polarizing the generator, but it refers to the positive ground system. Do you polarize the same way if it is neg ground? Also, could I just change the batt. cables to neg ground without changing anything else, then repolarize?

Polorizing is the same procedure reguardless of which ground is used be it pos or neg

Sounds like a coil getting hot to me. Have had this problem on cars before, not a tractor but the symptons sure sound the same.
