Hi, I'm new to the board. I've got a 1947 H that runs well except that it likes to pop out of 2nd gear. This is not usually a problem for me, because I'm generally using it in 1st gear when moving things in the pasture, or 3rd gear when on the road, but I'd like to know what would cause it to pop out of 2nd and how difficult it may be to fix. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Second is a sliding straight cut gear with a matching gear on the counter shaft. When put in gear, the teeth mesh across their width. For it to pop out, four things may be found to be either the whole cause, or partial contributor.
1) the second third shifter fork could be bent and not getting it into 2nd all the way. (pull cover to fix)
2) The detent ball and spring on the 2/3 shift rail may be frozen, weak, broken. Pull cover to fix
3) the teeth may be ground off to a bevel allowing it to want to come out of gear. Replace gears on output shaft, and lay shaft. Pull cover, pump, and disassemble trans to the basic case.
4) bearings may be out of the 2/3 slider allowing it to be forced crooked on the shaft. Same as #3

Best of luck, JimN
