Any thoughts, ideas or comments on the use of ultra low sulfur diesel in older engines? Anybody using lubricity additives in their fuel? Very concerned about the lack of lubrication for pumps and injectors. Off road diesel now is merely ultra low diesel dyed red (still 15 ppm sulfur). Heating oil no longer has a cetane rating, so you don't know what you're getting there. Maybe Tractor-Vet has smoe comments on this topic.

Supposedly, the fuel suppliers are putting additives in the new USLD fuel to make up for any lubricity lost during the refinement process.
I have to believe that they're doing it. Even these mega-trillionare oil companies couldn't withstand a class-action lawsuit from tens of thousands of angry diesel drivers. It's cheap insurance.

Most of the advice being given about USLD right now is not based on fact. Adding "snake oil" to your tank based on the advice of some old crumudgeon who has no credentials, no scientific proof, just an opinion based on a comment some other unqualified crumudgeon made based on a headline he picked up in a local paper... You need to be careful because that magic potion you're putting in the tank to make up for the "lack of lubricity" in USLD could do more harm than good.

For the amatuers like myself just throw a couple of gallons of paraffin/kerosene in with every tank full(It will also HELP to prevent fuel line freezing). The big gas turbines run on the stuff and their fuel pumps and governor systems are still largely fuel lubricated. Mike Farmer MTF

Since when was it changed? Last I was told is that off road is still LSD, not ULSD.Every off-road pump here has 500ppm on the sticker.Maybe look into a bio-diesel blend, my truck sure does love it.

Just what my local bulk dealer tells me. He says they have been able to get nothing but 15 ppm ULSD through the pipeline since july. They were told to leave the 500ppm stickers on the pumps until this winter to cover their backsides in case a little high sulfer residue was still in the system that might contaminate the emissions system in a new truck.
As to the fuel lubricity, he says that with the low cost per gallon to add a lubricity additive, why take the chance until everything has settled.
I add the lubricity additive every time I fill the 2000 gallon bulk tank. I still run a few machines with fuel lubricated pumps, so I consider it cheap peace of mind.

I am in the fuel deliver business here in Canada. In the 10 years in the business, I haven't once heard of a lubrication problem steming from using low or ultra low diesel.

SULFUR DOES NOT LUBRICATE!!!

However, the process that they use to remove sulfur from diesel fuel also destroys some of the lubricants in the fuel.

If you feel the need, you can put an additive in like (I prefer Stanadyne products) I haven't heard of any problems with older tractors yet...

I have never, ever understood this worry.

Why in the world would a guy be concerned about lubricating properties when the fuel IS actually oil to begin with?

Think the marketing boys at the fuel additive outlets have really done their job well.

They really should get a hefty raise for selling that load of manure and the wholesale duping of the public in that manner.

My concern comes from is already happening in the marine and trucking engine world, scored injectors and galled pump parts and a much higher cloud and gel point in ULSD. Cold weather filter plugging is occuring at much warmer temps. than the older stuff. Saw a plenty of last winter here in Southeast Va.,where we dont realy have cold weather anymore. Cummins dealer here has boxes and boxed of ruined PT type injectors, due to lack of lubrication. Just remember gasoline and kerosene both come from oil also but offer no lubrication to moving parts.
