SA hydraulic pump seal question - where does leaking oil go?

Good morning. I have been sifting through the archives to research my hydraulic pump whine problem and came across a few interesting posts. I am going to drain the reservoir a little and see if I can clean out the bypass behind the allen screw on the right hand side of the hydraulic assembly.

I changed the hydraulic fluid and noticed after working everything (tractor and hydraulics) I am a little lower on hy-tran fluid, when I got the tractor it was 1/2 full. If the oil is leaking through the pump where does it end up? I am smoking a lot, more-so at idle rpms. Will the hy-tran get sucked in and burn? It isn"t leaking out anywhere that I can see. Someone posted a part number for the seal that is available at Napa so getting it to change out shouldn"t be a problem.

Thanks.

I will look at adjusting the stop clips this week. Might be it - not sure. I can get the pump to quite down at idle when moving the levers up and down a little but when I increase the RPM"s or after a few minutes at idle it whines again. Probably a good idea to make sure it is adjusted properly anyway.

Thanks.

Steve: Don't jump to conclusions too quickly. You didn't say how exactly how much Hy tran you lost. Check to see if crankcase is level is rising first. Hydraulic oil levels will always be lower when rockshafts are in the forward position. That is why you check level with rockshafts in rear position, to prevent over filling.

The whine your hearing could well be levers out of adjustment.

Steve,
When you have a bad seal on the hydraulic pump input shaft, Hy-Tran fluid leaks past the seal into the engine crankcase. I had that problem on a SA several years ago, engine oil level rising, hydraulic fluid disappearing from the unit. Put in new hydraulic pump seal, problem solved. Not a complicated job (if I can do it).

If you drained and installed new fluid, you may have had air trapped in the system while filling and after the air was purged by operating the lifts the fluid level may have dropped to replace air pockets.
Proper fluid level is to the bottom of the fill plug opening, but I guess you knew that.
Be careful taking the fill plug out - sometimes there can be air pressure behind it.

If it is leaking the oil goes into the crankcase. If so your engine oil will be overfull. The whining can be caused by lift box being out of adjustment. It is critical that it be adjusted properly. If you can't do it, you should have someone who can look at soon. This is covered in the IT manual under stop clip adjustment.
