I have a 41 H that has an amp meter box that does not have a light switch or fuse. The tractor did have lights on it, but not sure if they are original or not. Could it be that the early H had an external light switch, somehwere else than the amp box, or maybe this tractor didnt have factory lights?

I have a 41 H that has the same set up. It came equipped with electric starter and generator but no lights. The amp box has never had a light switch or a hole for one. These are a little harder to come by. Look around at the next show you attend and see if you see one there. I would rather have something a little different. You must remember that in the early 40's many farmers were still using horses. Horses didn't have lights so why should tractors. That only cost extra money that may have been the difference between buying a tractor and continue using horses. Restore it like it is. Don't change it. You will draw attention at that next show.

I bought an amp gauge box like that on ebay a couple of months ago. There is no sign of a hole for the switch In the cover where they usually are.I assumed it was on an early M or H with the bosch no-battery lights.

I have seen (but cannot remember where) a IHC engine/power unit with the no light switch cover. JimN

Have a 40 M bought new by my grandfather. Was equipped with starter, generator, amp guage but no lights. Amp guage cover had the light switch hole punched (including keyway slot).

it is possible that that tractor had the starter kit but not the light kit installed when it left te factory. I have a servicemans guild for a M from 1939 and it shows as options these 5
1. Electric start only ..... ..... ..... .. 52037-D
2. Electric lights only..... ..... ..... .. 52038-D
3. Combination elec lights and starter..... 52722-D
4. Lights for tractor already haveing start..54632-D
5. starter for tractors already haveing lights..54633-D

If it was originally delivered with; no starter, no generator, no battery, and no lights, it would not have a amp box.

I've got a '40, a '43, and a '52 H, all with an amp box and they all have the four position switch under the ammeter: I've never seen an H with electrics that has no light switch?!?!

I'm with the rest....any chance of pictures?

I've never seen an amp box without a light switch in it. I suppose anything is possible, but when you consider that the tractors delivered from the factory WITHOUT lights would most likely NOT have been equipped with a generator either, then there would have been no need for an ampmeter, or an ampmeter box. Now I'll probably be up all night trying to figure this one out. Or maybe not.

I've seen pictures of H's in my Farmall H Photo book and the tractors without lights have no battery box, a delete cover over the starter hole, no light bar or lights, no generator, no switch box and no starter button bracket.

When I got mine it had no lights, amp box, or starter button. Luckily it had the rest.

Is there a hole under the amp gauge for the switch? If not, your switch box may not be original.

Here is a picture of the amp box. Definately no hole... I scratched around and there is no patching present when I peeked at the backside of the cover. Strange
