reversing the polarity shouldn't hurt the starter, but if I remember correctly, doesn't a 154 have clutch, pto, etc. safety switches?

Just a suggestion,Take the belt loose on the starter -gen and see if the starter turns .Those belts had a habit of slipping bad when they got old and dry.The starter-gen set up was not one of IH's better ideas.

I think maybe you just fried the starter. It should be negative ground. I dont have enough experience with the starter/generator setup, but I do have a 154. Its always worked fine. You could hook it up right and see what ahppens then. May be Ok.
