I have a chance to buy a 1951 Super C, with sickle mower, two bottom plow, scraper blade, and two row corn planter for $3600. I don"t need it to be a fantastic deal as I just want to mow my 12 acres and blade my driveway. It apparently runs and has good tires and was repainted and new brakes installed. All the attachments look ok and all but the corn planter are repainted. Should I go for it or is it way too overpriced?

Tom: It may or may not be over priced. Two factors you have to consider, condition and has it got fast hitch and are all those implements fast hitch. The fast hitch both on tractor and those implements are worth an extra $1,500.

Then consider condition of everything, good sheet metal is worth $500. Has it any castings welded from breaks, those are ugly and one can never trust the strangth of them. Then look for evidence radiator, water pump, charging system, starter, brakes, clutch assembly, governor, carburator, etc. have been replaced or rebuilt. Those items could be 56 years old and run you $2,000. or more if you plan on working the tractor. Finally check working condition of PTO and hydraulics. If it's never had a kit in hydraulics that could be $100. New hydraulic pump could be $350.

Consider this also, is the tractor coming from a working farm. George still gets a lot of work from his tractors that size, however working farms like George do annual maintainence. You put the same tractor in the hands of a guy retired for 25 years, has 8 sons or sons in law that use it and no one looks after it, there can be a lot of things wrong. It will just amaze folks how many things these old tractors can have wrong and still do family yard work.

Hugh, you have a good point about those sons and SIL's. I usually run mine myself as most folks won't take care of your stuff like you would. You are also right about lots of little things being wrong or bad and yet they still work. A couple of mine don't charge the battery, so I just hook them to the charger once in a while. I do however make sure all oil levels are up to snuff and do tune ups and stuff once in a while. It amazes me at how long these babies have been working and still able to get it done. I don't work mine as hard as I use to as I have larger tractors nowdays for the heavier work, but still use them quite a bit for various jobs here on the farm. I still mow lots of hay with them as well as raking, cultivating, planting, garden work and barn cleaning chores. Some of these old tobacco barns are to low for the bigger tractors to get in so the SC fits the bill on those. I think on his 12 acres, he couldn't do much better. They are capable of taking care of lot bigger spreads.

George: I hear you, back in the 1950s my Uncle Wallace farmed a 100 acres milked 20 Ayrshires and raised 9 kids and his only source of power was a Super A. I guess the Ayrshires didn't require as much horsepower as Holsteins. My dad milked 40 Holsteins on 200 acres, raised 5 boys and it took a 130 and a 300. Then again you've got to figure 6 of Wallace's 9 were girls. I've always questioned whether girls or Ayrshires took less horsepower.

Hugh, lots of farms including dairy farms here had only one or two small tractors to operate with. One old fellow I knew milked 40 cows, raised 8 acres of tobacco and 15 acres of corn for silage. His only tractor was a Super A. Seemed like his one bottom plow stayed on for 2 weeks when he was plowing. He hired someone to bale his hay, and cut silage, but done everything else with that Super A. Could have baled his own hay, but didn't have a baler.

George: I like that plow staying on for two weeks. The first year my dad and I plowed a 100 acres, the 130 did it with the two bottom fast hitch plow. That was roughly 30 days plowing. Those old Nov. nights got cool up here before we finished. By this time we had 3 tractors and the 300 and a Cockshutt 540 loader tractor did manure spreading detail. We both milked cows in the morning, and the guy that went plowing didn't have to show for evening milking.

Tom,it is a bit high, but if the tractor is a good one and implements in working condition, it is worth the money. I farm with these things yet. It will amaze you at the work these little jewels will do. I have seen them bring 4000 or more with cultivators on them here. Since the tobacco buyout they have gone down a bit. They are very low maintainance machines that get great fuel economy and pull twice as much as you think they could. Send me an email if you like, and I will send you some pics of them working.

3600 is not much money no more. the dollar has dropped in value meaning things cost more then they did a month ago. if you plan on keeping it for a few years it will likley be worth 4300 or so. i used to fill my 600 gallon diesel tank for 450 bucks now it takes 1500 or more. if you guys think gas is high now wait till summer time! i predict $120 dollar oil and 4.50 gas. i quit burning diesel for heat 2 years ago and parked my f150 truck. i dont use my bigger tractors if i dont have to. i have cut back my overall oil use by 60%.

Tom, if it is in good repair, it might not be overpriced. If you find a cheaper one and have to put together the implements to accomplish what you want to do you could run the price back up to this $ 3600. If everything is well maintained and or repaired it is worth the money. What else have you found in your area? Good luck on your decision. Dick fm Iowa.
