Just got done Thursday putting new radiator hoses, and gas style cap on my H with new antifreeze Started it up and it ran great, temp in the green range, and I could see the coolant moving trough the top of the radiator. Only took 3 gal of 50/50 mix antifreeze to fill it but I just drained what came out when I removed bottom radiator hose and pipe. This morning I was pulling a trailer full of wood around no problem this afternoon I started it and my brother was coming back with the trailer empty when it went to the red and started boiling out tube from the top. I loosen the cap and it blow the cap off.what do you think?

Well I drained the radiator and Block today and found a cotton type substance floating in the antifreeze in the top of the radiator. Any ideas what this could be? When I bought the tractor it had a big rat nest in the front of the radiator in front of the grill. The radiator was full of liquid I wander if thats were it came from.

After it boiled and cooled I removed the cap off the vent tube and plenty of antifreeze came out. Is the 4o model a non pressurized or pressurized system. The folks that had it before me didn't have a radiator cap on it they just had a old heavy crome cap laid on the top of some old car.

The fact that the "gas" style cap fits the radiator is proof that you have a non-pressurized radiator. The cap for the pressurized radiator will not fit the non-pressurized radiator, and vice-versa.

Capacity is 4 1/8 gallons. Drain it completly, including the block, put the correct amount in it and see what it does. Sometimes you "fill" the radiator, start and run it, then add to the proper level. Unless you ran it nearly dry, I doubt if you hurt anything. If it overheats again, drain and flush the system, also remove and clean under the plate on the left side of the engine. It will be full of crud. The radiator probably needs to be "rodded"--but it could be all that is holding it together is rust, meaning you may end up buying a new radiator. If so, the new one will likely be pressurized.

It was non pressurized. If there was air in it, that would explain the over heating. It holds near 6 gallons. JimN

Sounds to me like the engine had an air pocket in it when you filled it back up.It just took longer to force it out.It showed green on your temperature guage because there was no anti-freeze around the sensing bulb to show the proper temperature.

They have a plug on the block side of the thermostat you take out when filling, that bleeds the air out because the thermostat isn't vented.
