I found a '49 Farmall H for close to nothing and brought it home. The engine is stuck. Checked the oil and found the oil pan full of anti freeze. Drained that out and pulled the head. Found water sitting in all four cylinders. Head bolts were'nt all that tight. I haven't got anything cleaned up yet, just apart. Also found one bent push rod, 3rd from the back. I havent got the bottom end apart yet. What should I be looking for as far as the head goes? Thanks, Harold from Idaho

Here's something that worked for me on a '40 H that had been sitting in a orchard without a cover on the manifold when I bought it.

The engine was stuck tight: all four pistons were frozen in place, lots of water in each cylinder.I got all put one out with ATF, a mallet and 2x2, and patience, but the #3 just wouldn't budge (it had the most rust in it). An old mechanic/friend told me to clean it out and pour paint thiner in it for awhile: just keep it topped off and tap with a rubber mallet everyday.

Within 2 weeks it loosened the rust enough to get it free.

I've also been told PB Blaster works too, but I've never had the chance to try it. Hope this .02 cents worth helps.

I would have the head reworked at your local auto machine shop and have it magnafluxed for cracks.
If the engine is stuck I would pour ATF into the cylinders and let it soak. You should loosen the main and rod caps. You may need to use a piece of 2X2 oak and a hammer to drive out the pistons.
If the sleeves are pitted you may need to split the tractor and redo the engine. The crankshaft may need machining too. Hal

Thanks for the fast reply. I'll do that. I haven't got parts cleaned up yet, worked on it til late last night, but the head gasket looks good so far, and I had stuck valves, that may explain the bent push rod. I will go out and take the oil pan off today. Thanks again, Harold

Use a rag eyc. to get out as much antifreeze from the cylinders as you can. Then use air pressure to blow out any thats left before you pout the ATF in the cylinders. Other wise the ATF will just float on the antifreeze and do you no good. If it doesn't pop free in a month of less you can try this is works some times but you have to be very careful doing this. In a safe place top off the ATF with a table spoon of gas and light it up. Doing that heats the sleeves/block and makes the rings/piston looser in the cylinder and some times thats enough to free it up. NEVER do that with the head on by the way
