More on the M axle leak

We got the tire off and pulled the cover to the outer bearing. The inside race on the bearing isn"t even holding to the axle and it appears as though the axle has been turned down, possibly by someone, years ago blowing out that bearing and just kept on going? There is approx 1/8 inch of play when lifting up on the axle but the outer bearing seems fine. My point is it would appear, if we can pull the old bearing, that the new one wouldn"t even hold the axle. Anyone ever seen this? Any quick hints also on pulling that outer bearing? I plan on posting some pictures later today. Thanks C.

Just parted out an M; have 1 standard length axle to sell. Where are you located? I live in Fergus Falls, MN which is 50 miles SW of Fargo, ND.
I will be deer hunting this weekend so may not get to the computer until Sunday evening.

sounds like the bearing ate into the axle. either you will need a new axleshaft or have a machine shop weld it up and remachine it. your are gonna need to pull the deck, and the bull pinion to get that axle out. pretty good jop but not impossible. get at least an i&t manual to follow if you have never done it before. if you are in that far, i'd check the other axle and bearings too.

Getting the axle out may not be too hard.
Drain the differential
Remove the PTO unit
Find two 3/8 dia X 3" long bolts (might need 1/2" X 3") and use them to wedge up the bull gear by placeing them between the gear and the lower part of the differential case, and tapping them in a bit to hold weight. This holds the bull gear up and makes putting it back together much easier (remember to remove them!!!!! !!!!)
REmove the retaining bolt in the center of the bull gear, about one turn. Find a square piece of metal that will fit between the head of that bolt, and the one in the other bull gear. Use that to hold th bolt in position while continuing to unscrew the original bolt. This pushes the axle out of the bull gear.
I think, but am not certain (my photo did not load in the parts and pieces gallery) That the axle will push out of the housing and push out the outer bearing. The axle is larger where it goes through the inner bearing, and (hopefully) will pull the outer bearing with it. The pushing with the bolt will not go very far before it runs out of thread, so some pulling on the axle will be needed. JimN

I wouldn't think anyone would turn that axle down, cant see why they would do that. I would imagine that is has just worn over the years. The only fix I could see would be to replace the axle, not fun. Maybe someone else more knowledgable than me can come up with a fix.
