484 Fuel Filter and Bowl Assembly

I have a 484 that I'm using to clear our land and the other day something hit the fuel filter area hard and I think it broke the bowl and beat up the fuel filter area a bit.

On my model, there is only one fuel filter on the lower left side behind the between the clutch and the alternator.

When I got down there to look at it, the bowl was gone, the filter was dinged up, and so I removed several bolts and washers and gaskets.

I ordered a couple of new filters and bowls from a (relatively) local IH dealer and received them today so I went back out to the tractor to try and assemble it.

Because I'm not exactly sure how it looked before I started, I had a hard time figuring out how to put it back together so that it would seal just right. I think I'm close, but it doesn't feel 100% solid.

I decided to try and start it, but I could never get fuel to come into the bowl, and so I can get it to start at this point. (Now, I have to charge my batt!)

Does anyone know how the filter goes back on with the bowl or could take pictures and let me know?

If I'm pretty close, how can I get fuel to travel down toward the bowl. The tractor is facing downhill, so gravity should be my friend here. I've put in a couple of gallons of fuel, but it just doesn't seem to be getting pulled down.

Thanks for help,

Jay

Ok, it looks like I've got things running again, and so here is what I did:

Re-assembled the fuel filter per the diagram and that made it so that the height was correct and I could get a snug fit with the filter and bowl. Fuel was not flowing into the filter/bowl and so I had to consider how to apply pressure like Jim and Ron were suggesting.
I implemented a very "low-tech" solution and probably one you should not try at home. Basically I performed CPR on the tractor by providing my own pressure at the fuel tank opening while my son cranked the engine. After a couple of tries, we saw some dripping and then a steadier flow. We continued this combination a few times, sprayed some carb starter and it cranked right up. No leaks so far as of this morning.

Thanks for the help! This tractor newbie knows way more about his fuel system now than he planned.

Hi Jay,

I use the same CPR method but did not want to suggest it.

Good luck with your 484.

Hi Jay, there are two different types of fuel filters for that model. Look at CaseIH parts site as below:
Just select "SEARCH for PARTS" link from the bottom of this page -

Link

Then search for your model number on the page that opens. Fuel filters are under POWER page 12-34 and 35.

Re bleeding the fuel system, there is a bleed screw on top of the fuel filter assembly (Item #12) on parts page. Open that screw a few turns and let fuel flow until there are no air bubbles coming out the bleed screw. Then close bleed screw. Put OFF/START/RUN control lever to START position and crank engine. DON'T crank engine for more than 60 seconds at a time to prevent over heating starter motor. If engine does not start within two 60 second cranking attempts then you will have to loosen an injector line at the rear of the Diesel injection pump and then crank engine again. BECAREFULL when you loosen the injector line because this is Diesel fuel under 3200 PSI and can cause serious injury.

Another thing that helps is to put small amount (10 to 15lbs) of air pressure in the fuel tank.

Good Luck
JimB

Thanks for the quick reply, Jim. I did find the parts list and diagrams on the caseih.com site last night, so I know exactly what you are talking about. I will try the bleed procedure and see what happens. If I wanted to put some air pressure in the fuel tank, how would I do that? Air compressor?

To pressurize the tank, if ya have an old inner tube, cut a section out of it around the valve stem area then hose-clamp it to the filler neck of the tank. Just be careful not to put too much pressure in there.
