Well I got the engine up and going with freshly ground valves and a sleeve kit. Put a new carb on it, and it purrs like a kitten now... Already put it to work...

There's one fly in the ointment though.

When I first got this tractor 15 years ago the generator system worked well on it. I remember I had to adjust the regulator and set it up right.

In the intervening time though, it stopped and my family (I live 250 miles from where I keep the tractor) took it to a guy who apparently put a new generator and regulator on it, and they say it's never worked.

I took a look yesterday, and it's a 3 brush alternator, and one of the brushes was in there kinda wonky, the adjustable brush. I straightened it out so the brush will run square on the commutator but lost the position of which commutator it's supposed to be on in relation to the other two brushes.

Also the regulator has two large coils with contacts and 4 connections something I thought was for a two brush generator...

So do any generator gurus out there have any ideas?

I see a few options..

1) ground the field and play with the position of the brush until I get voltage(it rotates around the commutator and has a setscrew on the outside fo the housing)

2) shunt the field to the armature brush and convert it to a two brush and then check the regulator or get a new one if needed.

3) get a new 2 pole generator.

Any ideas?

A farmall C wiring diagram would also be nice to have.

You can just ground the field then adjust the third brush for output there are tons of them running around like that. If you replace the brushed it will probably be just fine asuming you stay with pos ground and polarize the gen wheyou get the new brushes in.

This describes the VR, I can't read the terminals, and like I said it's 250 miles away now.. But it has a 3 terminals up one side, and on the other side of th VR underneath has a terminal that is currently connected to the armature terminal on the gen.

I believe the three together has a wire from the battery, one from the ammeter ( it has two wires from the harness anon them anyway) and th third is from the field terminal on the gen.

That's kinda what I'm leaning towards, energizing the field and seeing if it'll output anything, and adjusting the brush and se if I can get anything out of it. I just have no idea where that brush is suppose to be, so I thought it might just be simpler to convert it to a two brush, provided the wire to the adjustable position brush is the one I need to shunt to the armature brush. Even if I need to go get a new regulator for it those aren't nearly what new gen is.

Tx, As usual Jim and I are pretty much in agreement, but I will toss out a few other tid bits which may or may not help at all lol.

On some of the Delco systems that used a 3 brush genny, those 2 coil/relay VR"s second (NOT the Cutout Relay) coil/relay was a combination Voltage and Current VR buttttt tt when they went to the 2 brush genny the 2 coil/relay used on them (although it looks the same) had a cutout plus a Voltage Control only coil relay. What Im trying to say is (and I do believe one can convert your genny to a 2 wire by the simple wire change and brush elimination as you guys figured) is that while it may indeed work it may not be as good as if that conversion had the VR that Delco used on the early 2 brush gennys. Heck try it n see if you let the smoke out lol but if it makes her charge at high rate right after a start up but then backs down once the battery is well charged its likely fine. However, if it stays at high max charge all the time or dont ever charge enough then it needs attention (maybe the corect VR)

The field supply wire can be attached to the same brush that connects to the Large screw "A" terminal. This will give the field full bat Voltage when needed. and is the way 2 brush units are made. Eliminate the third brush. Then connect the field F terminal to the Field term on the regulator. Then connect the the Gen or ARM term on VR to the A terminal on Gen.
Then connect the Bat terminal to the load side of the Amp gauge. The L terminal can be left bare, or hooked to the input to the light switch fuse. All wires to the light switch that were to the field should be not used. JimN
