Hello...have a 584 with a broken shaft to the foward reverse shifter.( not the speed trans which is foward of the range trans)..it is a "range " transmission. I took of the seat and the other covers and have found that I have to take off the fuel tank and everything else in sight to take off the top of the trans..... .can the shaft be replaced with the top of the trans off or does the trans have to be taken apart..... ..If I'm going to go that far..... shouldn't I replace the clutch also??? I'm new at this and could use some advice.. thanks in advance for any response.ken

Hi Ken, I saved this from Bernard le mécano. He was an expert on the 84 series tractors. I haven't seen him on this board for sometime. He was a great resource.

Broken Shifter Lever:

Hi Irving, I have changed many of those parts, at the Case-IH dealer, where I have worked for. You can remove the lever and replace it by the left side of the rear train (transmission?). Just drain the oil, remove the MCV control valve ( the plate that hold the hydraulic pump and filter). With a short 7/8 open wrench, loose(n) the sealed nut, remove the broken shaft and (re)place the new one. It have a big spline for the timing. Just align the short lever with the fork.

Hope this helps.
