Hydraulics on Farmall H not working

All of a sudden my hydraulics do not work on my Farmall H. Out of the blue. I did put the wrong fluid in at one point 90W, but most of it ran out the bottom anyway, which is another problem..dripping from the case. I put 30 W in...still not working. I'm not too good with hydraulics obviously. Could the problem be with the hose or dirt on the fitting. Some guy told me you can pull the pump and filter out easily and check it. Is that what I should do and does it come out the bottom? HELP.
I can't lift my cutter up....the tractor's that is. Mine still works! :}

Thanks.

THANK YOU ALL FOR VERY INTELLIGENT AND COMPREHENSIVE REPLIES. I KNEW I COULD COUNT ON YOUR GUYS.

WHEN I HAVE MUCHO TIME, I WILL TRY ALL, STARTING WITH THE KERSOSENE DRAIN AND REFILL AS THE EASIEST.

YES, THE HYDRAULICS WERE WORKING PRIOR TO PUTTING 90w IN IT, BUT SAT BEFORE I TRIED TO USE IT AGAIN.

I will check mechanicals, as I do not think it is the pump....just my hunch. Will let you know when problem is solved or fixed. Thanks again. hbauer

I have pics on my website showing how I removed the pump.

Did the hydraulics quit suddenly while you were using the tractor? One problem I have seen a few times is the lever return spring breaking and the broken part gets drawn up into the pump gears. The gears lock up them and cause the treads to strip out in the drive coupler.

I wouldn"t think this is likely as the parts involved are pretty tough, but check the drive coupling inside the sheet metal cover and make sure the slot hasn"t sheared off or any other problem there.

I think GeneMO hit it on the head...90 wt is WAY to thick, and in cold weather causes all sorts of problems.
I've got a '40 H and use 30 wt in the summer, and switch to 20 wt when the temp gets really cold.
Washing it out with kerosene or diesel fuel could fix the problem for you, but I bet you'll have to lower the pump out to get it working.

Look at the parts diagram --caseih.com-- follow the instructions to search for parts. The pump needs to be taken out to service it. One item not mentioned is if the lever has loosened on the shaft, it might cause the problem. THe most likely is a pressure relief valve stuck open (a piece of dirt) these pumps would not be damaged by 90 wt, but in cold weather they might have operational reluctance. Some use ready rod (allthread or threaded rod) to lower the pump after all the elbows and the lever are removed. JimN

The pump does come out the bottom. There are several methods for doing this. Two people and a floor jack really helps. Once out you could replace that pesky leaking seal.

Wonder if that heavy grease you put in by mistake is plugging or bridging over the oil intake area of the pump and not letting it get oil?

You might try flushing it with diesel fuel or kerosene for a little bit, then draining that out. I think most folks say to put 30w non detergent in them. If it was working before you put the grease in it, then that is all I can think of.

Good luck, Gene
