For the rear tires, 12.4x38 means 12.4 wide, and 38 across.
What does the 5.5 mean on a 5.5x16 tire? They way I've heard it discussed it means height of the sidewall?

If true, why the difference?

They are Goodyear 12.4x38. They look pretty beefy.

Mike, 5.50 is the width of the tire. Width is also directly related to height, however. A properly inflated 5.50-16 tire will be taller than a 5.00-16 tire. A 6.00-16 will in turn be taller than a 5.50-16. Rear size is the same, except for the 14.9-38. This tire is the oddball. It has a taller sidewall than a 15.5 and mounts taller on a 13" rim than a 15.5 does on a 14" rim.

Mike,
Tire sizes have been an issue from day one of Harvy Firestone etal making them with air inside. Today's tractor tires are also a mess. Using partial old measures of inches in decimal to describe either the width of the tire tread (kind of) or the width of the body of the casing. In neither is the aspect ratio indicated, it is just up to the manufacturers to make it so. Front tires and wagon tires for AG are measured at the tread (usually) rears are now measured at the body of the tire.
Even car tires are wierd. They use inch rim sizes, metric widths of the body, and aspect ratio ie: 50 60 70 80 these are a ratio of the width of the body compared to the height from bead to tread. 50 series tires are 1/2 as tall as wide from the tread to the bead. Then there are the off road sports tires measured in standing diameter as well as the other measurements. Oh well. JimN

12.4 inches is the width of the cross section at the widest point of the tire. It is the same tire as the old designation of 11, which is the tread width. So, a 12.4-38 tire for your H has an 11 inch tread width and a 12.4 inch cross section. The designation for the front tires did not change. 5.50 is the width of the tire. But, I am not positive whether that is tread width or cross section, pretty sure it is cross section.

If width is the case for front tires, why was I told that with the size of the rear tires I'm getting, I should get 6.0x16 in the front so the tractor sits level?

Hi Mike, My H has 12.4x38 on the rear and 5.50 on the fronts and it sits level. The old tires that were on it were the old 11x38 size but were the same size tire. the original fronts were still 5.50 and it sat level also. My M has 14.9 38s and 6.00 fronts and it sits level. What is the size of the rears you are getting?

You won't notice the difference. I believe the standard size for your tractor was 5.50-16, Mine has 12.4 rears, 6-16 fronts. Be sure to get the same ply rating in both front and rear or you will see a difference. For the intended use of your tractor, it makes no difference, but most H's used for farming have 6 ply tires. If you mix them it will be noticeable.

5.5 means 5 and one half in. wide and 16 for 16 inch rim. The old size was 5.50x16.
