PTO will not engage. I rebuilt the power steering motor, changed hydrulic oil and filter. I started up, every thing works, steering, main hydrulic lift, except the PTO. I have removed the clutch and verified that it is ok. Both PTO shafts, gears and bearings, OK. I have vented the system twice. Power steering works better than ever.

Hi Webb, here is info from the archives given by Bernard le mécano. Bernard was an expert on this series of tractors having worked at a Case-IH as a mechanic for many years.

Hi Tony, the pressure comes into the PTO clutch pack, by the rear PTO shaft, by 2 seals rings. If you can check the pressure, about 185 to 200 psi, by the small T on the left side. It has a gasket, that blows, under the MCV valve, may be it's your trouble.

Another thing to try is: with engine running about 1000 RPM and nothing connected to the aux hydraulic valves activate the aux control lever until the hydraulic relief valve squeals. This shock to the system will sometimes blow dirt out of any stuck valve. Can do the same thing with power steering, turn steering wheel to beyond max until relief valve squeals. CAUTION, ONLY DO this if your hydraulic lines are in good shape. Could blow a worn hydraulic line or hose.

Please lets us know the solution. My brother has 454,495,684 and 3230 which all have the same rear end so it probably will happen to one of his tractors someday.

Thanks, sounds good. It will be Tuesday before I get a chance to try this. If this don't work, I'm pulling the MCV.

Hi Webb, The PTO lever activates a spool valve in the MCV valve. There is an adjustment for the PTO control lever and the actuator for this spool valve. Refer to CIH 674 parts page 10-18 items 23-27,40,35 and 38. Once on my brother's 454 (same rear end) after the PTO had not been used all winter it would not engage. My brother asked the local IH Mechanic and he said spray your favorite penetrating oil around the rubber boot on top of the MCV valve and work the PTO control lever forwards and backwards. Fixed the problem. Next would be to do the pressure check at MCV valve. Hydraulic oil is forced thru the lower PTO shaft to feed the PTO clutch. Possible clogged shaft or leaking seal on the shaft.

Hope the problem is just the sticking spool valve.

The plunger into the MCV is working. There is also an ajustable pressure regulator next to the PTO plunger. I haven't opened it yet, my next move.

I wonder!

When I dismanteled the steering motor, I didn't notice anything out of place or worn excessively. I did find three "BB" size steel balls in the cavity of the outer houseing. Could the PTO valves have gone out and jamed the steering motor? The steering became extermly hard suddenly while discing. That is why I overauled the Steering motor. I can't imagine where these balls would have come from.

Hi Webb, did the PTO work before or is this a new problem?
