friends 1486 has a starter problem. tractor ran fine, shut down, starter wouldnt engage with the key. pulled the deck up to check the starter, voltage to solenoid was good, however wire to enegrgize solenoid would not show power when key activated. starter works fine if solenoid jumped. is there a shift interlock switch somewhere. checked the 2 amp fuse its good.

Check the clutch safty switch up under the hood on the leftside on the fire wall of the cab. It may be that the switch took a dump or it is out of adjustment.

Now on all the 86 seires that i have worked on i do not remember a safety switch on the park and i know my 1486 does not have one as i have had just about every nut and bolt out of that tractor. Just the clutch safety switch on the fire wall Just fallow all the orange wires .

the 86's have the safety switch on the park position. the 66's have it on the clutch.

Early 86 series tractors only have the one saftey switch, mounted on the firewall and activated by the clutch pedal. The '81 models had the clutch pedal actuated switch on the firewall, as well as one on the park lock linkage. The switches were wired in parrallel, so only one or the other had to be closed. The main reason for this was that IH got too many complaints from operators about how hard it is to depress the clutch pedal when the engine is not running (no hyd. assist).
