I have been fixing up a 400 diesel and have a problem. I don't know how the previous owner ever started this thing, but I got into the intake manifold and the shaft and round disc contact plate have been removed which are necessary to start in gas mode. Of course these items are discontinued and junk yards want me to buy the whole manifold for $50-$75. Anyone have suggestions on how to rig something to work since I can't locate the original pieces?

My 450 must have had the same problem, the manifold switch has been bypassed, so it is wired just like a gasser, it works just fine so I have not fooled with it.

I agree with Jim. Seems like a cheap fix to me at even 100 dollars if it gets your tractor going. Could be a lot worse as you could spend 5 grand on that engine.

I figured that is the response I would get on fixing the problem. I have totally rebuilt this engine already and as everyone knows it is very expensive to do, so I was hoping there might be an inexpensive fix to my problem. If my wife ever got ahold of the receipts for all of the parts, I might be in biggg trouble!!

I got in trouble with mine once over tractor parts. When we were doing our taxes she seen where I spent 7000 dollars on two tractors that year. She wasn't very happy, but the tractors make the money around here.

If you just need the butterflies, I have some you could have if you wanted. I removed them from a cracked manifold, if I can remember where I put them. If you need the butterfly shafts also, the only extra I have is for magneto ignition. Most 400 have battery ignition and the front shaft is different to turn ignition on and of when linkage is moved for gas diesel operation. I have removed butterflies and shafts before to change shaft seals. Most times its not a easy job to get screws out of shafts. I agree with others, if you can get a manifold with a good switch in the front for $50 to $75 your probably ahead.

I must say that rigging up something is not operationally a good idea. The time will not be justified. The junkyard deal seems sweet to me, and I teach machine technology. JimN
