IH 464 Running Hot

I would really appreciate some advice here. I have a "73 IH 464 gasoline tractor. It had a water pump hub come of and ruin the radiator. I had the radiator recored and installed a new water pump. It"s been running hot. I"ve flushed the system with the aggressive Permatex flush. I found a lot of rust and sediment when I pulled the water jacket plug on the block. I blew compressed air through the block and out the water outlet. I"ve been running without a thermostat, and it seems better. I installed a 180 degree thermostat today, but it still runs hot. The fan has a homemade shroud that I modified to normal shroud specifications, and it seems to pull lots of air. I tried an electric fan, and the direct-driven fan works much better. I don"t see the normal symptoms of a blown head gasket or cracked block. No exhaust or pressure in the radiator that I can detect. Belt is tight and water flow is good. I"d really appreciate any help.

Was it running hot before the water pump and radiator were replaced, or did the problem show up right after replacing them? If this happened right after replacing those parts, I'd suspect that the water pump impeller is spinning on the shaft, impeller pressed on backwards or not far enough, or a problem with the radiator recore job.

As I remember, it ran pretty hot before the water pump hub came off, but due to a family accident, the tractor has been sitting idle for a while, and I've just now had the time to work on it. The coolant flow in the radiator seems quite strong, but there could still be a water pump problem, I guess. I believe the water pump was a new, rather than rebuilt, unit. Thanks for the reply.

Are you sure it is hot? Seems to me if it got hot there would be pressure at the radiator cap. Might just be a bad gauge or sending unit.

Yes, I'm afraid so. If I run it with the 7# cap on, it will eventually boil over. Usually, I stop it before then, and it will boil over after I shut it off due to heat sink effect as the temp will climb to 230 or 240 degrees.

Thanks for the reply, though.

Well we are pulling at straws here but when they recored the rad. did they use a core that may not have enought tubes or smaller tubes thus it has lees cooling area or less coolant then org. Nex check ing. timing for total advance at rated RPM . Next remove the hood and remove the thermostat and fill only to the top of the neck of the therostat housing with the top hose off and remove the fan belt so the water pump does not work . Do this with a cold engine . Start the engine and rev it up if it is a cracked head block or blowen head gskt. it will look like old faithful and shoot water out . Then ya know for sure . Next try higher test gas this will run cooler then req gas. Also check for a smashed exhaust pipe or pluged muffler.

Well...this test was interesting. When I cranked the engine without the belt on and with the cooling system filled to just above the water outlet with the radiator hose turned up, a big slug of coolant came out even before the engine started. The engine has never been hydraulically locked, nor have I seen coolant in the oil, so this is strange. One would expect a direct passage into the combustion chamber to see this. Anyway, after the initial slug, some bubbling was evident until the block heated up and started to push coolant out. Upon removing the head, I didn't see any evidence on a bad leak. It has the metallic head gasket, and I've had trouble with these on large, two-cycle industrial engines. The middle two cylinders are burning whitish, while the outer are black. There is a small area between one of the chambers and the water jacket that could be a crack, but I'm not sure. I guess it's off to the machine shop.

Thanks...those are great suggestions. I feel pretty comfortable with the recore. I haven't checked timing. I like the procedure for testing for cracked head or blown gasket. I'll try this weekend.

Might check your timing as they will run hot if it is off a little.

Will do, but have to get a timing light first. Thanks!
