my engine just randomly started blowing oil out the muffler. The engine is in a international harvester 100E. The engine is the d-239.

Commonly called "slobbering" and pretty much any diesel will do it when idled under cooler conditions.

Just needs to be worked --- also, maybe your thermostat is opening too soon and the engine isn't coming up to temperature.

If it is sending black gooey splatters & slobbering out of the exhaust you are probably looking at an under worked engine. IHC diesels (and most non-electronically controlled diesels) will do this when idled for any amount od time. Getting them under load and working for 2 hours will cure it, but it will come back. If it is grey/blue smoke, and is persistant when operating under load, it probably needs an overhaul. Normal black Diesel smoke under load is not an indication of problems. JimN
