I came home today and tried to start my tractor. It made about 1/4-1/2 crank then nothing. I voltage tested my battery and had 6.12 volts and when I pushed on the start lever it went to 4.37 volts. I cleaned all the connections last week because it started hard. I took off the little rocker switch on the starter motor and I could see where the copper piece had been making contact. I touched the battery lead straight to the contact on the motor, It sparked but still would not turn over. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would sell it and then the problem will be gone.

Hit the starter with a hammer, it might be hung up on the flywheel.

Assuming it is a good charged battery that holds a charge, and cables are clean and attached and of 00 size.

Either pull the starter out of the housing, or try this:
With the ign. off put it in high gear then rock it violently back and forth with the top of the rear wheel. the fan should show some motion if it fixes it. (It will be a temporary fix)
In either case it may make a clicking noise as the starter comes unjambed from the flywheel. Bolt it back on, or put it in Neutral, and try it again. A new clutch style drive (from CaseIH) replaces the original. If still no luck, taking the starter to a electrical shop for a test will be next. JimN

I could not get it to turn with the fan (belt would slip) so I put in in 5th gear and pushed back and forth on it like crazy and started to hear the motor turn over. I put it in neutral and could then turn the motor over with the fan. Hooked the starter back up and it started right up!!! Thanks so much andy, you the man!!!

I love this place!!

Sounds to me like a starter/or starter drive problem. Does the tractor turn with the hand crank?

Can you turn it by the fan or crank pulley?
