There was a farmer killed in SE PA this past Saturday when he jump started his farm tractor.
I guess he forgot to put it in neutral. Hal

Putting gas in a tractor that is running is an absolute no-no. I witnessed a horrible fire when I was a kid. Gas overflowed the tank, hit the exhaust pipe (IHC 10-20, exhaust under the tank) and whoosh! The teenager holding the hose died from this.

We had a 10-20 when I was kid and we never filled the gas tank with engine running. Even when we were filling silo we filled in the morning and shutdown at noon for lunch and refilled the gas tank and checked the oil level. Our neighbor had a 15-30 used only for belt work and he always shut the engine down too. Hal
PS: The owner of that 15-30 did custom threshing
and I usually followed it since they needed help. On the last job of the season when they were blowing straw into the straw mow it hit a light bulb and started a fire. The thresher was lost since the 15-30 had solid rubber tires and wouldn't pull the thresher from the barn. There were a lot wet eyes in that area. That's been 57 years ago and as a kid I never forgot it.

Do they still have that sale at Galena? We went down a lot when I was a youngster. One of my wife's classmates has a big farm down at Cecilton
his name is Fred Schrader and his brother Harry has a farm around Betteron. Hal
PS: Sorry to hear about all these tractor accidents.

The sale barn in town is long gone. There is a spring and fall sale at Turners just south of town. We have gottin some good deals there.

I have never in my life heard of a hay ride death. Not one. I'm not saying they don't happen, but I've never ever heard of someone dying.

My sister was seriously injured on a hay rack ride. They had two wagons and she was switching from the front wagon to the rear wagon. She fell and was run over by the rear wagon. Was is a cast for two months. One problem was that the person driving the tractor did not know how to make an emergency stop!

Mistakes are easy to make around equipment. Machines can increase aggravation and decrease caution. Fatal tractor accidents are not as common as they used to be but any are sad. One of the most common tractor accidents I hear of this time of year is not related to farming, but to fall fun. I love hay rides but hear of way too many deaths and injuries, particularly of young kids, from our fall festival hay rides. Keep safe in work and fun.

Speaking of not paying attention and/or lulled into over-confidence. My buddy loaned me his dual wheeled/cab equipped/huge diesel engined green monster tractor to drill a dozen hilly acres to winter wheat yesterday. Talk about smooth powerful zero effort to operate! In a very short period of time you could lose focus on the job at hand. At least when I'm using my M I've got noise, smoke, gear changes, and wind to keep me situationally aware. My buddy promised not to tell the Keg Creek Antique Machinery Club that I had used a John Deere and my wife will not even consider my request for $ 100,00 for a used tractor and grain drill! Do be careful out there in the harvest! Dick fm Iowa

I think that we have all stood in front of the rear wheel when jumping a tractor...

I'm in Lancaster County, maybe they didn't cover it here.

Hard to believe that Channel 8 wouldn't have covered it though. I was away for a couple days. maybe it was on then.

I think my nephew watches channel 8. I do sometimes, but channel 43 comes on at 10pm with the news. I sometimes get more news about Baltimore than from the Baltimore channels. We usually eat Thanksgiving dinner at the Willow Valley Inn. Hal
