Last fall I was in West Va visiting near Greenbank. Where I was a local had parked 2 H's. They had been parked for quite a while. I noticed one of them has a Hand Clutch. Were many of these installed? Is this a rare item? How did they make them work? I see it is connected into the left brake drum.

M&W made the hand clutch. They are pretty hard to find.

Yes, It is a seperate clutch on the bull pinion shaft. It lets the shaft freewheel stoping forward motion while letting the PTO continue to run. They were made by M&W Kind of unique but not extreemly rare. I see more on Ms than Hs. Repair parts are hard to come by.

It was probably an M&W "live power" unit. They went in the left brake & would stop the wheels just like the Allis "dual clutch" set up. Great add-on to give a LPTO option to tractors that did not come with that option. I'd like to find one for my H. (They made them for "M's" & the super series, too.) The only other hand clutch that I have ever seen was part of a "one man" binder drive unit for a binder. Dad had one that went to the junk man-wish I would have gotten it before it was cut up for scrap. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
