I was looking in the catalog on line at the picture of the front light mounting brackets. They look like plain metal rods with a flattened end and a hole. Picture shows no threads on the tractor end. How does that work? what holds the bracket in the hole if there are no threads or are they maybe just not showing up in the pic? Stupid question, I know, but the weather is nice and I am waiting for all this illuminating stuff to arrive.

No threads on the round end, Dave. If you look around just inside the front end, just ahead of the engine, you'll see a rounded area of the casting right behind where they slip in. With luck, you'll see a square head plug sticking up. If not you'll see a threaded hole. The square head plug threads into the hole and locks down on the light support rod. Gives you in-and-out and up-and-down adjustment. If the plug is missing, there's no reason tou couldn't ue a regular bolt I don't think, but I' can look up the thread size if that'll help. OEM sells the plugs. By plug, I mean the head is no larger diagonally than the diameter of the thread, unlike a bolt square-head bolt shere the head is larger than the thread.) Same set up for the light support going into the rear light bracket, just easier to get to!

Well heck! Glad I asked that one! Guess I better get the flashlight and crawl in there and see if I can figure it out. It HAD lights but they were scavenged or busted off at some point. Hope those set screws/plugs are still around. Hate to be a whiner but every little thing some yo-yo steals or loses adds anothe nickel onto the cost and the cost adds up. Think I'll check on it after lunch. Even if they are in there, no guarantee they are gonna come out I guess. I'll let you know.

The set screws are 3/8# NC x 1". The book says they're cup point set screws, but no more stress than is on them, I'd expect you could use standard hardware goods just fine.

If the set screw are there, go easy on them and don't break them off. That WOULD be messy to clean up. The holes at the font are on the rough part of the casting, behind and slightly above the topmost of the three holes on the implement mounting pad. If the holes are empty just clean them out with someting like a battery cable terminal brush.

If there are remnants of the old ones, the steering casting and the lower water inlet may prevent you from just driving them through, so you might have to do some drilling and tapping to jet a bolt into them to pull them out. Who knows, they may come out easy.

Decided to go out before lunch and the squaree headed set screws are in place. Look like they are in very good condition! I suspect if I gently niggle them out with those fancy ignition wrenches Jim gave me permission to buy (really honey, they TOLD me I HAVE to have these!) then there will be no problem. Guess I'll just wait for the lights to arrive and then see if I can get a hold of the brackets. Still waiting on Gene to get back to me on the rear light but I have bought from him before and know he can take time to respond. Getting dark early around here so I could use some lights! Thanks for the info!

Dave

I don't remember what size, but a small twelve- point socket on a ratchet will grab those square-heads, too.

As far as ignition wrenches, my old ones seemed to have gone the way of many small tools I had as a kid. All I could lay my hands on was my 11/32, which does work on a lot of stuff. I needed something smaller when I was working on that Deere 420 a few weeks back. Decided to bite the bullet and went to NAPA to see about getting a full set. They're usually pretty good over there, but the kid helping me had never heard of igniion wrenches so I explained what they were. Wound up going though the books with him and finally found them. They call them "midget wrenches" now.

There is a threaded hole inside the frame for a set screw to hold the rod in
